College Town Conversations: Making, Keeping, and Losing Friends in College

The ways colleges are structured shape how easily students make and keep friends. In her book Making, Keeping, and Losing Friends: How Campuses Shape College Students’ Networks, Janice McCabe investigates students’ experiences at three types of college campuses. She shows how and why, across all three institutions, some students thrive in deep and lasting friendships with their peers. Janice McCabe is a professor of sociology at Dartmouth College and the President of the Sociology of Education Association. Her teaching and research focus on educational inequalities, young people’s identities, and friendship networks.
