Poetry Book Club

Join us at Howe Library for Poetry Book Club; a relaxed, welcoming space to enjoy poems together and share what they spark in you. Each month we’ll read a selection of poems from a chosen book and then gather to chat about favorite lines, themes, and impressions. Thursday, October 22th The Painted Bed by Donald Hall In The Painted Bed, Donald Hall reflects on aging, illness, love, and the approach of death with characteristic honesty and wit. Written after the death of his wife, the poet Jane Kenyon, the book is deeply personal but never sentimental; Hall moves between grief, memory, poetry, and the ordinary details of daily life. His prose is direct and often wry, creating a moving portrait of a long marriage and of a man learning to live with loss. Donald Hall was an American poet, essayist, and writer whose work explored nature, mortality, memory, and the rhythms of rural life. He served as U.S. Poet Laureate from 2006 to 2007 and lived for many years at Eagle Pond Farm in New Hampshire, where he wrote extensively about the landscape and life around him.
