In 1880, Israel and Mary Sadoques made a daring journey: they traveled down the Connecticut River by canoe with their young children, leaving the Odanak Reserve in Quebec to build a new life in Keene. Over the generations, their family flourished, producing local business owners, a nun, and two of the first Native American registered nurses in the United States. Join us for a special Native American Heritage Month event with Joyce Heywood, great-granddaughter of Israel and Mary. Joyce and her sister, Margaret Perillo, edited and published these remarkable family memories—originally written by their mother, Claudia Chicklas—in the book Woven Through the Sweetgrass. Joyce will share these cherished stories, show beautiful family heirlooms, and answer your questions. Registrations appreciated.
