First Women's Strike in America, 1828 — Oldest Settlement in NH

About Dover

Dover is the oldest permanent European settlement in New Hampshire, founded in 1623 when brothers William and Edward Hilton arrived at the confluence of the Bellamy and Piscataqua rivers — making it the seventh-oldest settlement in the United States. The Cocheco River drops 33 feet through the center of town, and that waterfall powered sawmills, gristmills, and eventually the Cocheco Manufacturing Company, whose 1828 workforce staged the first women's labor strike in American history. The old mill buildings have been converted into the Cocheco Falls Millworks, now home to breweries, restaurants, tech offices, and apartments in the kind of adaptive reuse that actually works. Downtown Dover has become one of the liveliest small-city centers on the Seacoast, with a density of restaurants, coffee shops, and bars along Washington and Central Streets that rivals much larger places. The Woodman Museum, established in 1916, preserves the city's deep history through exhibits in multiple historic buildings including the 1675 Damm Garrison House and 1818 Hale House. Garrison Hill offers panoramic views from the White Mountains to the Isles of Shoals, while Henry Law Park provides river access and walking trails along the Cochecho River with a boat launch for those wanting to get on the water. Dover's relatively affordable housing compared to Portsmouth and Durham has made it a magnet for young professionals and families moving to the Seacoast. The city sits just fifteen minutes from the coast, giving residents easy access to both river recreation and ocean beaches while maintaining the walkable downtown energy that makes Dover feel more vibrant than its size would suggest.

Why Dover?

  • Walkable downtown with independent restaurants, shops, a weekly farmers market, and the restored Dover Opera House hosting live performances
  • No state income or sales tax, with a median home price around $545,000-$560,000 — significantly below neighboring Portsmouth

Schools & Education

Dover is served by SAU 11, operating three elementary schools (K-4), Dover Middle School (5-8), and Dover High School with a Regional Career Technical Center (9-12) offering 19 technical programs. The high school also serves students from Barrington and Nottingham. St. Mary Academy provides a private Catholic option for grades PK-8.

Cost of Living

Dover's cost of living runs roughly 17% above the national average, driven primarily by housing costs that are about 41% higher than the U.S. median. However, New Hampshire's lack of state income and sales tax offsets some of that premium, and Dover remains more affordable than neighboring Portsmouth and other seacoast towns closer to the water.

Hidden Gems in Dover

Beyond the well-known attractions, Dover has spots that locals love and visitors rarely find.

Garrison Hill Tower

year-round

A 76-foot iron observation tower built in 1993, standing atop a 298-foot glacial drumlin. The third tower on this historic site offers stunning 360-degree views reaching the White Mountains, Maine coastline, and Portsmouth Harbor on clear days. The climb is worth it for both the panoramic vistas and the fascinating history—this spot once hosted everything from roller skating rinks to telescope viewings back in the 1880s.

Bellamy River Wildlife Management Area

year-round

A sprawling 400-acre natural sanctuary where locals escape to quiet trails threading through salt marshes, tidal creeks, and woodlands. The mix of habitats makes it prime for spotting waterfowl, osprey, and the occasional red fox. Unlike the nearby tourist spots, this feels genuinely wild—you'll hear more bird calls than car engines.

Dover Community Trail Murals

year-round

Hidden artistic treasures tucked under bridges and in tunnels along the 6.4-mile community trail. The Silver Street tunnel features vibrant murals painted by local volunteers, while newer art appears under the Spaulding Turnpike. These aren't on any art tour—you'll only find them by actually walking or biking the trail sections most visitors skip.

"Reaching Across" Sculpture at Joe B. Parks Riverwalk

year-round

A striking archway sculpture crafted entirely from recycled metal by artist Markus Weinfurter, installed in 2025. The vine-like frame sprouts 36 copper flowers (created by Dover High welding students) while industrial gears and gauges nod to Dover's mill town past. Most people walk right past this riverside garden entrance without noticing the intricate storytelling in twisted metal.
