Home to New England's Only Quarter-Mile Dragway

About Epping

Epping began as part of Exeter and was chartered as its own town in 1741, built on brickyards, shoe manufacturing, and agriculture along the Lamprey River. When Route 101 was upgraded to an expressway in the mid-1990s, the town transformed from a sleepy rural community into a retail destination anchored by Brickyard Square, which draws over three million visitors annually. Despite the growth, local leaders fought to preserve the historic town center around Main Street and Route 27 while putting hundreds of acres into conservation. The result is a town that functions as a gateway between the Seacoast and Manchester, with a strong school system and a tight-knit feel where neighbors still greet each other by name. When you need to catch a movie, O'Neil Cinemas provides entertainment as part of their regional New Hampshire theater chain, offering first-run films right in town. The Lamprey River continues to define much of daily life here, providing trails and water access that remind residents why this spot along the river was chosen for settlement centuries ago. Epping offers a rare balance: big-box convenience minutes from protected farmland and river trails. You can grab dinner at a chain restaurant near the highway, then walk your dog along quiet country roads where the only sounds are water flowing and leaves rustling. It's the kind of place where modern amenities meet old New Hampshire sensibilities.

Hidden Gems in Epping

Beyond the well-known attractions, Epping has spots that locals love and visitors rarely find.

Telly's Restaurant & Pizzeria

year-round

This beloved local institution serves as both restaurant and live music venue, featuring outdoor dining with a fire pit and an impressive 22-tap draft beer selection. The warm atmosphere draws locals for weekly live entertainment, Italian fare, and their famous brick-oven pizza. What makes it special is the genuine community feel - it's where locals gather for celebrations, sports events, and regular nights out with neighbors.

Leddy Center for the Performing Arts

year-round

Housed in a renovated former Leddy Brothers building from 1985, this intimate 215-seat theater showcases local talent in professional-quality productions. The venue has an incredibly cozy atmosphere where there truly isn't a bad seat in the house. From political parodies written by local playwrights to musical performances, it's where Epping's creative community comes alive.

Lamprey River Access Points

summer

The Lamprey River offers several lesser-known spots for swimming, fishing, and quiet riverside walks along protected forest land owned by the Society for Protection of New Hampshire Forests. Locals know the river's seasonal swimming holes and the beautiful protected shoreline where you can escape into nature just minutes from town. Spring brings the annual canoe race, but summer reveals quiet pools perfect for a refreshing dip.
