About Nelson

Nelson is a tiny Cheshire County gem of 629 souls, perched on the height of land between the Connecticut and Merrimack river watersheds. The town is famous in folk circles for its Monday night contradance, held in the town hall for over 200 years — what many claim is the longest-running public contradance in the world. The Apple Hill Center for Chamber Music brings international performers to this unlikely hilltop setting, blending high culture with backroad simplicity. The Monadnock-Sunapee Greenway, a 50-mile hiking trail, passes directly through the town center, and four ponds fed by mountain streams provide fishing and paddling. Old grist mill and sawmill foundations dot the landscape, and the views of Mount Monadnock from Nelson's ridgelines are among the best in the region. This is a town where culture and wilderness coexist in perfect, unhurried balance.

Hidden Gems in Nelson

Beyond the well-known attractions, Nelson has spots that locals love and visitors rarely find.

Apple Hill Center for Chamber Music

summer

A magical 100-acre campus where chamber music masters gather year-round in an idyllic rural setting. During summer evenings, the Louise Shonk Kelley Concert Barn hosts intimate performances with outdoor seating always free, preceded by buffet dinners on the lawn. The resident Apple Hill String Quartet and world-class guest artists create an atmosphere that's both sophisticated and wonderfully rustic.

Nelson Cemetery on Hardy Hill Road

year-round

The town's original burying ground from when Nelson was called Packerfield, featuring a striking fieldstone monument built in 1917 to honor Revolutionary War soldiers. The memorial was completely rebuilt in 2004 using original cobble stones and stands as a silent tribute to these brave men who left their fields to fight. The oldest part of the cemetery holds stories from the 1750s.

Kulish Ledge Trail and Partridge Woods

year-round

A hidden trail network leading to scenic ledges with views of Spoonwood Pond and surrounding mountains. Named after John Kulish, the first teacher-naturalist at the Harris Center, these trails wind past old cellar holes, beaver ponds, and historic mill sites before reaching Cheshire County's second-highest peak at Osgood Hill. The ledges offer intimate vistas that most visitors to the area never discover.

Center Pond

summer

A pristine designated trout pond where motorboats are banned, creating a peaceful swimming and fishing spot known mainly to locals. The quiet waters reflect the surrounding forest, and families often explore the woodland trails before taking a dip in this secluded gem. It's the kind of place where you might have the entire shoreline to yourself on a weekday afternoon.

Granite Lake

summer

A 233-acre lake straddling Nelson and Stoddard with crystal-clear water reaching depths of 115 feet. The village of Munsonville at the lake's outlet provides access to this glacially-formed basin surrounded by forested slopes. Popular with locals for kayaking, swimming, and fishing, but rarely crowded. The three-mile lake road offers perfect walking or biking with mountain views.
