Newcastle

New Hampshire's Only Island Town — Smallest by Land, Richest by Sea

About Newcastle

New Castle is the smallest town in New Hampshire and the only one located entirely on an island, connected to Portsmouth and Rye by short bridges over the Piscataqua River and Little Harbor. Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse, its 48-foot tower built in 1877, stands guard at the harbor entrance from historic Fort Constitution — the site of Paul Revere's lesser-known first ride and what some historians call the first overt act of the American Revolution. Fort Stark, another coastal fortification, offers a window into the region's military past. Sandy Beach and New Castle Common provide scenic ocean access, with the Coast Guard station at one end and a seaside park at the other. Grand oceanfront homes line Wentworth Road, and the views across to Kittery, Maine change color with every tide. With a population of about 800, this is one of the most exclusive and historic communities on the New Hampshire seacoast.

Hidden Gems in Newcastle

Beyond the well-known attractions, Newcastle has spots that locals love and visitors rarely find.

Great Island Common

year-round

A beloved 32-acre seaside park that feels more like a local secret than a public space. The Common offers sweeping views of Portsmouth Harbor from grassy meadows dotted with picnic tables, and the occasional art installation adds character. The real magic happens at sunset when sailboats drift across the horizon and the salt air carries the cries of gulls. Many visitors discover this gem by accident, drawn by the peaceful atmosphere that locals have treasured for generations.

Fort Stark State Historic Site

year-round

Hidden at the end of Wild Rose Lane, this weathered military fortress sits on dramatic Jerry's Point with crumbling concrete batteries and sweeping Atlantic views. The abandoned structures tell stories of wartime vigilance, while volunteers have cleared brush to reveal spectacular ocean vistas and hidden gun emplacements. The rocky shoreline below offers tide pooling and a small beach perfect for kayak launches. It's the kind of place where history buffs and nature lovers find equal satisfaction.

Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse view from Great Island Common

year-round

While the lighthouse itself requires special access, the view from Great Island Common's fishing pier offers one of New England's most perfect lighthouse compositions. The 48-foot white tower stands sentinel against the harbor entrance, framed by Fort Constitution's stone walls and the keeper's house. Early morning fog often shrouds the scene in mystery, while afternoon light illuminates the structure built in 1878. It's a photographer's dream that most tourists never discover.

Oceanside Cemetery

year-round

This small seaside cemetery tucked behind Great Island Common surprises visitors with its elaborate Victorian monuments and unique sculptures. Angel statuary keeps watch over graves while an unusual metal sculpture of what appears to be a bear or large cat marks one family plot. The Colotti grave features seagulls and a lighthouse carving, reflecting the maritime heritage of this island community. Ocean breezes rustle through the modest grounds where New Castle's families have rested for generations.
