About Pembroke

Pembroke straddles the Suncook River between Concord and Manchester, giving residents a short commute to New Hampshire's two largest employment centers while keeping small-town costs. Suncook Village, the town's historic downtown, landed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005 for its red-brick mill buildings and granite-trimmed storefronts that date to the early 1800s. The Pembroke Cotton Factory Company built the first textile mill here in 1811, and the river powered manufacturing for over a century. Today Suncook Village is in genuine revival — Oddball Brewing, Pembroke City Limits for live music, and new small businesses have brought fresh energy to Main Street. Associated Grocers of New England operates a massive 380,000-square-foot distribution center in town. Pembroke Academy, the town's high school, has served the community since 1818. The town offers some of the most affordable housing in the Concord-Manchester corridor.

Hidden Gems in Pembroke

Beyond the well-known attractions, Pembroke has spots that locals love and visitors rarely find.

White Sands Conservation Area Loop

summer

A sandy beach along the Merrimack River with unique exposed tree root systems and a notable sand dune. The 500-square-foot wetland area is home to endangered species including bald eagles. Locals call it a town favorite with swimming, trail walking, and peaceful riverside moments away from the crowds.

Suncook Village Historic Mill District

year-round

One of New Hampshire's oldest mill towns where towering red-brick mills from the 1860s line the Suncook River. The village straddles Pembroke and Allenstown, with the China Mill now converted to luxury apartments and the Pembroke Mill transformed into Emerson Mills condos. French-Canadian heritage still echoes through the streets of this National Register historic district.

Plausawa Hill

year-round

The highest point in Pembroke at 1,000 feet elevation, named after the last known Pennacook Indian who lived here until 1754. A communications tower marks the summit, visible from Concord and surrounding towns. Views stretch to Mount Kearsarge, Mount Sunapee, and Mount Lovewell from the rocky ledges near the top.

Memorial Park at Suncook

year-round

A riverside park overlooking the Merrimack River where it meets the Suncook River, featuring towering trees and a boat launch. This is where the annual Old Home Day celebrations begin and rowing regattas are held. The 26-acre park includes volleyball courts, baseball fields, and walking trails that locals use for peaceful morning walks.

Pembroke Street Cemetery and Hearse House

year-round

Behind the historic Hearse House lie the oldest gravestones in Pembroke, with weathered markers dating back centuries. This atmospheric cemetery holds the town's earliest burial records and features the small but well-preserved hearse house that once sheltered funeral wagons. The gravestones tell stories of Pembroke's founding families and early settlers.
