This Month: Bring in something that needs fixing or mending (textile, wood, ceramic, or knitted item) or come share a repair skill. We can brainstorm together and even address a fix right then and there. THURSDAY, JULY 16 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM In Library Maker Space Drop in Anytime During Session No Registration Necessary About the Group Mending and Repair: A shared interest group and learning circle, focused on repairing our stuff and sharing our diverse “fixing” skills. How can we join together to build a movement toward creative repair within a wider culture of disposability and consumerism? How can we shift our mindset toward fixing and keeping, rather than throwing away and buying more? It’s a matter of sustainable practice, but it’s also about reclaiming our own human ingenuity, resourcefulness, and manual skill. Some possible activities include darning socks and moth-eaten sweaters, sewing by hand (hems, buttons, basting), basic machine-sewing, and simple wood repair. In addition, we might explore kintsugi, the Japanese practice of artfully mending broken ceramics, and "visible mending" of textiles through colorful needlework and fabric patching. We are open to ideas and invite anyone to join us to “share and repair,” i.e. work on individual projects within a supportive community. We welcome tinkerers, tool-users, and crafters who share an interest in preserving and enhancing what we already have and who seek the satisfaction of active problem-solving, working with our hands, and screen-free activity.
