About Auburn

Auburn is a peaceful, rural town centered around the sweeping shores of Lake Massabesic, just twelve miles east of Manchester yet worlds apart from the city's pace. Originally a Native American fishing settlement called Massabesic — named by the Pennacook people in 1624 — the town became independent in 1845 and took its name from Oliver Goldsmith's poem 'The Deserted Village.' Today about 6,000 residents enjoy wooded landscapes, lake views, and a community that still prizes open space. The Massabesic Center wildlife sanctuary offers five miles of trails, pollinator gardens, and environmental education programs. The town maintains parks, athletic fields, playgrounds, and a public ice-skating rink, while the recreation department runs programs from youth sports leagues to arts workshops. Auburn feels like the kind of place where you can see the stars at night but still grab dinner in Manchester in fifteen minutes.

Hidden Gems in Auburn

Beyond the well-known attractions, Auburn has spots that locals love and visitors rarely find.

Auburn Historical Association Museum and Hearse House

year-round

A small-town museum housed in a historic building at 102 Hooksett Road that opens only on the third Saturday of each month from 1-3pm. The real gem is the recently relocated 1855 Hearse House, believed to be the last horse-drawn hearse used until 1914, now preserved on the museum grounds. Local volunteers moved this unique piece of funeral history from the Auburn Village Cemetery in 2024, making it a fascinating stop for those interested in 19th-century local culture.

Battery Point Trail and Lookout

year-round

A 3.7-mile out-and-back trail through the Massabesic Audubon Center that leads to Battery Point, a scenic peninsula offering beautiful views across Lake Massabesic. The trail passes Milne Pond and has periodic benches for resting. At Battery Point itself, hikers find a lovely grass clearing among the trees with stunning water views - perfect for a quiet picnic away from crowds. The historic Battery Point was once a prime summer destination with trolley service and steamboats in the 1800s.

Mount Miner Summit Trail

year-round

A short 1.3-mile out-and-back hike to Auburn's highest point at 582 feet above sea level. This easy 41-minute trail offers nice views from the summit, though it's shared with ATV users and has become a local hangout spot. The trail is unmarked but followable, and despite some litter issues, provides a quick escape with decent views overlooking Massabesic Lake. Best visited during off-peak times to avoid crowds of local teens.

Historic Dockham Store

year-round

This relocated 1700s-era general store now sits on the grounds of the Auburn Historical Association after being carefully moved from its original location on Dearborn Road. The building once stood near the corner where Revolutionary War gatherings took place around a liberty pole on the hill behind it. This authentic piece of colonial Auburn history was donated to preserve the town's heritage and represents the kind of country store that served rural New England communities for generations.
