Spacetown — Birthplace of America's First Astronaut

About Derry

Derry traces its roots to 1719 when Scotch-Irish Presbyterian families from County Londonderry, Ireland, settled the area and established one of the first Ulster Scots communities in New England. Robert Frost lived on a farm here from 1900 to 1911, writing many of his most famous early poems — the farmstead is now the Robert Frost Farm, a National Historic Landmark and state park open for tours and poetry readings. Alan Shepard, Pinkerton Academy class of 1940, grew up in Derry before becoming the first American in space in 1961 and later walking on the moon during Apollo 14. Pinkerton Academy itself is one of the largest independent high schools in the country, serving as the public high school for Derry and several surrounding towns. The town sits along the I-93 corridor with a straightforward commute to Manchester or the Massachusetts border, and its mix of suburban neighborhoods, local farms, and wooded conservation land gives it a feel that's distinctly residential without being cookie-cutter. For recreation, Don Ball Park on Hampstead Road provides baseball and softball fields where local teams play throughout the season, while the conservation areas offer trails for walking and hiking. Downtown Derry has been investing in its walkable village center around the Alan Shepard Civic Plaza and Broadway. The combination of historical sites, recreational facilities, and easy highway access makes Derry a practical base for families who want space to spread out while staying connected to the broader region.

  • The Robert Frost Farm, a National Historic Landmark, anchors the town's deep literary and cultural heritage dating back to 1719
  • No state income tax or sales tax, combined with home prices below Boston-area levels, creates real savings for families and professionals
  • Hood Park, MacGregor Park, and over 1,500 acres of conservation land provide trails, playgrounds, concerts, and outdoor recreation year-round

Hidden Gems in Derry

Beyond the well-known attractions, Derry has spots that locals love and visitors rarely find.

Taylor Mill State Historic Site

summer

Tucked away in Ballard State Forest, this 200-year-old working sawmill is powered by a massive waterwheel that still cuts timber at 60 strokes per minute. The rhythmic thrum of the saw and splash of water over the dam create a mesmerizing soundtrack. You can watch the "up and down" sawmill demonstrate 18th-century technology while fresh sawdust fills the air with that unmistakable scent of cut pine.

Weber Town Forest

year-round

At 275 acres, this conservation area offers some of Derry's best marsh views and wildlife watching away from the crowds. The wetlands and ponds create prime habitat for waterfowl, and the mixed hardwood-softwood forest provides excellent cross-country skiing in winter. Multiple access points via woods roads make it feel like your own private preserve.

Francis Cormier Trail at Cole Marsh

spring

This 3.2-mile loop circles a peaceful pond that's home to waterfowl and wildlife, with bridges built by local Boy Scouts adding charm to the wooded walk. The trail winds through old farmland that's been reclaimed by forest, and you'll often spot beaver activity. Spring brings wildflowers, while fall offers excellent birding as waterfowl use the marsh during migration.

Robert Frost Farm Ghost Stories

Beyond the standard poetry tours, locals know the farmhouse has a supernatural reputation tied to the death of Frost's young son at age four. Tour guides sometimes share tales of the "moving doll" and "haunted upstairs room." The 1880s farmhouse feels heavy with stories and imagination, making it easy to sense lingering spirits among the rooms where America's beloved poet once lived.
