Hampstead

America's First Honey Factory Town Since 1816

About Hampstead

Hampstead is a quiet, tree-lined residential town near the Massachusetts border that functions as one of southern New Hampshire's most stable commuter communities. Settled as early as 1640 when the area was still part of Haverhill, Massachusetts, it became a New Hampshire town in 1749 after a boundary dispute was resolved, and Governor Benning Wentworth named it for the London neighborhood where his ally William Pitt lived. The original Hampstead Meetinghouse, built between 1749 and 1768, still stands and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Main Street and Stage Road carry Route 121 through town, passing colonial-era homes, stone walls, and not much in the way of commercial sprawl. High school students head to Pinkerton Academy in Derry, one of New Hampshire's oldest schools, founded in 1814 with a $16,000 endowment. The town's three water bodies — Big Island Pond, Sunset Lake, and Angle Pond — account for about 400 acres of surface water and anchor much of the summer recreation, including youth camps that bring a seasonal population bump each year.

Hidden Gems in Hampstead

Beyond the well-known attractions, Hampstead has spots that locals love and visitors rarely find.

West Road Conservation Area

year-round

This 900-acre network spans six miles of diverse trails through woodlands, granite outcrops, and wetlands that locals know intimately but few visitors discover. The trail system includes colonial-era foundations and stone walls, a flooded wetland called Hogg Hill Meadow that attracts abundant birdlife, and trees ranging from seedlings to 260-year-old giants. Mountain bikers and hikers enjoy everything from wide logging roads to twisting single tracks, with surprises like glacial erratics scattered throughout.

Old Mill Ruins on Darby Brook

year-round

Three historic mill sites hide within just a mile or two along Darby brook in the eastern conservation areas. One substantial ruin still holds back a pond frequented by ducks and a beaver family, while another preserves an intact stone spillway that once regulated water flow to the wheel mechanism. These forgotten remnants of Hampstead's industrial past are connected by quiet woodland paths that locals treasure for their sense of discovery and solitude.
