Hidden Gems in Danville

Beyond the well-known attractions, Danville has spots that locals love and visitors rarely find.

Beehive Hut

year-round

A mysterious stone chamber of unknown age and origin, hidden in the woods behind the town maintenance depot. This ancient beehive-shaped structure is part of New England's network of unexplained stone chambers, possibly thousands of years old. The trail is marked by local scouts with arrows pointing the way through a quarter-mile easy walk. You'll find yourself stepping down into a U-shaped chamber with massive stone slabs for a roof, wondering who built it and why.

Ye Olde Cemetery

year-round

This historic burial ground holds the graves of Danville's earliest settlers and tells the town's most tragic story. Here lies Reverend John Page, the beloved first minister who died in 1782 while tending to victims of a smallpox epidemic. The weathered stones and peaceful setting one-tenth mile north of the Old Meeting House make this a contemplative spot where you can almost hear whispers of the town's colonial past.

Tuckertown Road Trail

year-round

This haunting Class A trail follows the path of Danville's first official highway from 1766, now designated as a scenic road frozen in time. The unpaved road stretches over a mile through the town forest to the Sandown line, passing through areas where tragedy struck during the 1782 smallpox epidemic. Stone walls and old foundations hint at long-abandoned homesteads, and beaver flowages have created wetlands that add to the mysterious atmosphere.
