Sandown

New Hampshire's Finest and Most Intact Colonial Meeting House

About Sandown

Sandown was carved from Kingston in 1756 and named for Sandown on the Isle of Wight. Its 1773 Old Meeting House still stands as one of New England's finest examples of colonial church architecture. The town once sat along the Nashua and Rochester Railroad — the busiest single-track line in the country — and the beautifully preserved 1874 Sandown Depot now serves as a local history museum. Today Sandown is a quiet, wooded residential community where Phillips Pond, Angle Pond, and several smaller water bodies give residents year-round outdoor access without the crowds. The ponds are popular for fishing, kayaking, and swimming in summer, while the surrounding woods offer plenty of trails for hiking and exploring. Route 121A connects residents to Derry and the broader I-93 corridor in about 15 minutes, making it a practical base for commuters who want space and affordability. The town runs its own recreation programs and maintains an active volunteer culture that shows up at Old Home Days every summer. Zorvino Vineyards adds a local flavor to the community, producing wines from both locally grown and imported grapes. It's the kind of place where you know your neighbors and can still find affordable housing within reasonable commuting distance of the Seacoast and Boston areas.

Hidden Gems in Sandown

Beyond the well-known attractions, Sandown has spots that locals love and visitors rarely find.

Sandown Old Meeting House

year-round

Built in 1773, this is considered the most elaborately finished and least altered meetinghouse surviving in New Hampshire. The interior remains virtually unchanged with its original closed-box pews, massive goblet pulpit, and hinged bench seats where worshippers leaned during long prayers. The slave pews in the balcony tell a sobering story of the town's colonial past.

Sandown Historical Society & Museum at the 1874 Depot

summer

Housed in what's called the 'best remaining example of a depot on the Nashua and Rochester Railroad,' this small museum captures the era when over 50 trains daily thundered through this quiet town. Outside sit two restored flanger cars with their small snowplows that once cleared tracks beneath moving trains. The depot sits right on the rail trail where you can still feel the ghosts of that bustling railroad past.

Rockingham Rail Trail (Fremont Branch) - Sandown Section

year-round

This former railroad bed offers a particularly atmospheric stretch through Sandown's wetlands and forests. The trail passes right by the historic depot and remnants of railroad infrastructure, with stretches of soft sand that make it feel more like a woodland path than a typical rail trail. Cross-country skiers and snowshoers claim it in winter when the sandy sections become smooth corridors through snow-laden trees.

Angle Pond Grove Beach

summer

A quiet 110-acre pond with a small beach that locals use for swimming and picnicking. It's the kind of place where families spread blankets on summer afternoons while kids splash in water that's monitored for quality but never crowded with tourists. The setting feels wonderfully removed from the hustle of larger New Hampshire lakes, with gentle shorelines perfect for launching kayaks or canoes.
