Belmont

On Lake Winnisquam, NH's Fourth Largest Lake

About Belmont

Belmont is a working-class Lakes Region town with waterfront on three bodies of water: Lake Winnisquam, Silver Lake, and Sargent Lake. Originally part of Gilmanton, it split off in 1859 and was renamed after New York financier August Belmont in hopes he would donate to the town — he never even replied. That self-reliant streak still defines the community. The Tioga River powered textile mills starting in 1833, and the restored Belmont Mill now serves as a community center in the village. Pike Industries, one of New England's largest road construction and aggregate companies, has its corporate headquarters here. The Winnisquam Scenic Trail offers a 1.8-mile lakeside walk, and Lakeview Golf Club provides nine holes with water views. NH Motor Speedway sits just south of town, bringing NASCAR events and motorsports fans to the area. Belmont offers significantly lower home prices than neighboring Gilford and Laconia while still delivering genuine lake-country living.

Hidden Gems in Belmont

Beyond the well-known attractions, Belmont has spots that locals love and visitors rarely find.

Lake Winnisquam Scenic Trail

year-round

A 1.8-mile paved rail trail that winds through lush woodlands and offers stunning glimpses of Lake Winnisquam through the trees. The trail has gentle rolling terrain with curves and modest hills that make it more interesting than typical flat rail trails. Unlike busier state park trails, this one feels peaceful and offers scenic lake views from several spots, plus it connects to the longer WOW Trail for extended adventures.

Belmont Mill

year-round

This 1833 brick mill building stands as a monument to preservation history and local resilience. After a devastating 1992 fire nearly claimed it, passionate citizens led a remarkable restoration effort that earned national recognition. Now serving as a community center, the mill houses multiple services and displays, with its story commemorated on a New Hampshire historical marker. The building exemplifies what locals call the 'Miracle on Main Street.'

Province Road Meeting House

year-round

Dating to 1792, this weathered wooden meeting house is one of the oldest church buildings in the Lakes Region and sits quietly along the historic Province Road laid out in the 1760s. Originally built two stories high with galleries, it was cut down to one story in 1836. The building has witnessed over two centuries of community gatherings and now serves as a testament to early New England religious architecture, recently restored through community fundraising efforts.
