About Northfield

Northfield sits along the southern bank of the Winnipesaukee River, sharing a village center with its twin town of Tilton just across the water. With direct access to Interstate 93 and only 17 miles north of Concord, it strikes a rare balance between rural living and genuine convenience. The landscape rolls through forested hills, open meadows, and quiet neighborhoods where Bean Hill rises to 1,500 feet offering panoramic views. Hundreds of acres of conservation land and swimming holes along the river give Northfield an outdoorsy, unpretentious feel that draws families and retirees alike. The Tilton-Northfield corridor provides shopping, dining, and services without the sprawl, while institutions like Tilton School and Spaulding Youth Center add educational depth to the community. It's the kind of place where you can hop on I-93 for a Lakes Region weekend or a Concord workday and still come home to genuine quiet.

Hidden Gems in Northfield

Beyond the well-known attractions, Northfield has spots that locals love and visitors rarely find.

Hall Memorial Library

year-round

This stunning 1887 Richardsonian Romanesque building serves both Tilton and Northfield and is considered one of the most architecturally distinguished buildings in the region. Built with red brick and brownstone trim, it features round-arch windows and intricate brickwork. The building is an almost exact replica of a library in Brookfield, Massachusetts, making it a rare architectural gem hiding in plain sight.

Underground Tunnel Entrance near Tilton Memorial Arch

year-round

A mysterious brick-lined tunnel entrance sits just off the paved path between the Tilton Memorial Arch and downtown Tilton. Though currently blocked with a boulder and iron door, locals know of its extraordinary workmanship and unknown purpose. Some believe it was part of the Underground Railroad network, while others think it connected to the Hall Memorial Library. The entrance is about 10 feet from the main path, marked only by worn foot traffic patterns.

Knowles Pond Conservation Area

year-round

This 55-acre pristine pond surrounded by 85 acres of conservation land offers what locals call an "undeveloped shoreline paradise." No motorized boats disturb the tranquil waters where a resident pair of loons nest each year. The well-maintained trail system includes the Hemlock Loop and Pine-Oak Trail, winding through hemlock groves and wetlands. Stone walls and old mill foundations hint at the area's history as the former municipal water supply.

Richard P. Smart Conservation Area

year-round

This hidden 25-acre gem along the Winnipesaukee River was once part of the Spaulding Youth Center before being cut off by I-93. Named for a longtime Northfield resident and former headmaster of Golden Rule Farm, it offers long frontage on the river and peaceful trails accessed through an easement from the parking area. The property feels like a secret world, tucked away from the highway noise yet offering prime river access.
