About Enfield

Enfield spans both sides of Mascoma Lake in Grafton County, with the village center on the western shore and residential areas extending toward the hills. The town operates under the traditional New England town meeting form of government, with residents gathering annually to vote on the municipal budget and local issues. As part of the Mascoma Valley Regional School District, Enfield students attend the local elementary school before continuing to the regional middle and high schools. The community maintains several civic organizations, including the Enfield Community Building Association, which helps preserve local gathering spaces. Lake access and rural character define much of daily life here, with many residents drawn to the combination of water recreation and the working landscape of farms and forests that still characterize much of the town.

Hidden Gems in Enfield

Beyond the well-known attractions, Enfield has spots that locals love and visitors rarely find.

Smith Pond Shaker Forest with Big Dog Falls and Little Dog Falls

spring

A wild 995-acre forest preserve hiding two spectacular waterfalls accessible only by hiking trails. Big Dog Falls tumbles through a narrow, steep-walled ravine while Little Dog Falls creates an S-curve cascade over ledges into a picturesque pool near a unique rustic bridge. The trail winds through remnants of Shaker history including hand-dug canals, stone spillways, and old mill sites before reaching pristine Smith Pond with its several small islands.

Colette Trail Waterfalls to Crystal Lake

spring

A quarter-mile stretch of dramatic waterfalls cascading over smooth ledge and granite, including one spectacular falls below a one-lane bridge and the famous 'grandfather rock' formation. The trail follows pristine Bicknell Brook through a series of cascades that locals describe as 'Maine-like' before ending at Crystal Lake. Most people drive right past the small parking area without noticing this gem.

Enfield Center Historic Triangle

year-round

Three beautifully preserved 1800s buildings that form a tiny historic district: the 1851 one-room schoolhouse, the Greek Revival Town House, and the shared Union Church built by three denominations who couldn't afford separate buildings. During Old Home Days, locals open these buildings for tours, but most visitors never discover this cluster of authentic New England architecture tucked away in Enfield Center.

George Pond and Bog Road Wetlands

fall

A 275-acre pond at the corner of Route 4A and Bog Road that serves as the gateway to miles of scenic wetlands and marsh habitat. The small boat launch area offers intimate access to the pond, while Bog Road continues south through beautiful marshlands toward McDaniels Marsh Wildlife Management Area. Locals love this spot for fall foliage and wildlife viewing, especially since it connects to a network of old Class VI roads for exploring.
