About Grantham

Grantham spans 42 square miles in Sullivan County, with a population of just over 3,000 residents. The town operates under the traditional New England town meeting form of government and maintains its own village school as part of SAU 75. Much of the community's daily life centers around local governance and the school district, which serves as significant employers alongside municipal operations. The town's location in the Dartmouth-Sunapee region puts residents within reach of both recreational opportunities and employment centers, though many appreciate the distance from more densely populated areas. Grantham's rural character means residents often need to travel to neighboring communities for shopping and services, but this trade-off comes with lower population density and more open space than found in busier parts of New Hampshire.

Hidden Gems in Grantham

Beyond the well-known attractions, Grantham has spots that locals love and visitors rarely find.

Butternut Pond Trail

year-round

A secluded 44-acre pond reached by an easy 2-mile hike through historic stone walls that once marked the old North Grantham-Enfield Center Highway. The crystal-clear water reflects the surrounding forest, and a granite ledge on the southern shore offers perfect picnic spots. Home to pickerel, largemouth bass, sunfish, and yellow perch for those who want to drop a line.

Cole Pond with Chimney Ruins

summer

A trout-stocked pond accessible via a 2.7-mile trail that leads past rocky caves to the remains of an old chimney from a long-gone cabin. The clearing around the chimney site has become a local favorite for swimming and picnics, complete with an old metal rowboat held together by duct tape. The path follows stone walls marking the historic boundary between Grantham and Enfield.

Dunbar Free Library

year-round

Built in 1901 when Lorenzo Dunbar donated both land and building in memory of his deceased wife, this historic library served as the town office, women's meeting room, and library all under one roof. The original stone building has been carefully expanded while preserving its character, and it's become the cultural heart of town with book clubs that cook from recipes and movie nights with popcorn.

Grantham Mountain Cemetery

spring

A remote historic cemetery reached by hiking to the end of Miller Pond Road, past the snowmobile warming hut to where the road intersects with the old Croydon Turnpike. Surrounded by forest at the base of Grantham Mountain, this quiet burial ground holds stories of early settlers and feels like stepping back in time. The walk there takes you through the town forest on old logging roads.
