Hidden Gems in Groton

Beyond the well-known attractions, Groton has spots that locals love and visitors rarely find.

Sculptured Rocks Natural Area

year-round

Known locally as New Hampshire's 'Little Grand Canyon,' this 272-acre natural area features narrow rock gorges carved by the Cockermouth River over thousands of years. The rushing water has sculpted smooth, curved formations and deep potholes that create natural swimming pools in summer. A wooden footbridge spans the canyon, offering stunning views into the swirling rock formations below. The sound of water echoing through the granite chambers creates an almost cathedral-like atmosphere.

Mary Baker Eddy Historic House

year-round

This small cottage sits on the edge of Hall's Brook where the founder of Christian Science lived from 1855-1860 with her husband Daniel Patterson. The property includes the stone foundation ruins of Patterson's failed sawmill operation, now overgrown and haunting. Tours reveal the modest quarters where Eddy experienced what she later called her 'first discovery of the Science of Mind.' The brook still babbles past the house, and the surrounding hills remain largely unchanged since the 1850s.

Jewell Hill Trails and Viewpoints

year-round

This 1,990-foot hill offers a network of old logging roads and snowmobile trails that locals use for hiking, mountain biking, and exploring remnants of 19th-century mica mining. Stone walls from abandoned hill farms snake through forests that have reclaimed the cleared land. The 'Jumping Off Point' rock outcrop provides views over Sculptured Rocks Road and toward Newfound Lake. Multiple trail options range from easy woods walks to longer loops reaching scenic viewpoints, all accessible from residential roads.
