About Plymouth

Plymouth sits at the confluence of the Baker and Pemigewasset Rivers, serving as the cultural and commercial hub for dozens of surrounding towns in the central White Mountains foothills. Plymouth State University, founded in 1871 as a normal school, shapes every facet of town life — from the restaurants and shops along Main Street to the arts programming at the Silver Center for the Arts. The Flying Monkey Movie House & Performance Center adds another layer to the cultural scene, hosting both films and live performances in a renovated historic building on South Main Street. Speare Memorial Hospital provides critical healthcare for the region, and the New Hampshire Electric Cooperative is headquartered here. The town functions as a true gateway: I-93 runs through it, connecting residents to Concord in under an hour while putting Franconia Notch and the Kanc Highway within easy reach. This location makes Plymouth a natural base for the outdoor culture built around skiing, hiking, and river paddling that defines life here. Downtown Plymouth has a scrappy college-town energy — craft breweries, local bookshops, and pizza joints — that keeps things lively whether students are in session or not.

Why Plymouth?

  • Plymouth State University drives a vibrant arts, dining, and cultural scene year-round
  • Direct I-93 access puts Concord 50 minutes south and ski resorts 30 minutes north
  • Speare Memorial Hospital and regional services make it the hub for surrounding towns
  • Pemigewasset River and White Mountain trails deliver four-season outdoor recreation at your doorstep

Hidden Gems in Plymouth

Beyond the well-known attractions, Plymouth has spots that locals love and visitors rarely find.

Livermore Falls Swimming Holes

summer

Two distinct swimming areas on the Pemigewasset River offer everything from gentle family beaches to adrenaline-pumping rope swings. The upper falls feature golden sand that gets scorching hot under the sun, while the lower section hides beneath an old railroad bridge where locals have been cliff jumping for generations. Ancient brick mill ruins dot the shoreline, adding mystery to your swimming adventure.

Historic Plymouth Railroad Depot

year-round

This 1910 depot stands as a testament to Plymouth's role as the gateway to the White Mountains, now serving as a community center but still retaining its original architecture. The building replaced the original station that burned with the famous Pemigewasset House hotel in 1909. Today you can still hear the rumble of freight trains and occasionally see scenic fall foliage trains stop here, just as wealthy tourists did over a century ago.
