Monroe

Where the Connecticut River Narrows to Just Five Rods

About Monroe

Monroe is a Grafton County town perched along the Connecticut River, where the narrows squeeze New England's longest waterway to just five rods wide between walls of slate. The Comerford Dam and McIndoe Falls Dam, both largely within town limits, generate hydroelectric power and create a dramatic landscape of reservoirs and flowing water. Signal Mountain, a knob on Gardner Mountain, rises to 2,299 feet and provides sweeping views of the river valley. Peter Paddleford, inventor of the wooden Paddleford truss for covered bridges, called this place home — and several of his original bridges still stand across the region. With a population under 900, Monroe maintains that classic upper Connecticut River Valley character: volunteer fire department, town meeting governance, and neighbors who wave from their tractors.

Hidden Gems in Monroe

Beyond the well-known attractions, Monroe has spots that locals love and visitors rarely find.

Connecticut River Narrows

year-round

A dramatic geological formation where the Connecticut River squeezes down to just five rods wide (about 82 feet), confined by towering slate walls. This natural bottleneck creates swirling currents and a sense of intimacy with the powerful river that few visitors discover. The sound of rushing water echoes off the stone walls, creating an almost cathedral-like atmosphere.

Historic Deer Islands

spring

Five small islands in the Connecticut River that were part of the original colonial land grants and where the first settler built a log cabin in 1784. These largely forgotten river islands hold centuries of history and provide peaceful spots for kayakers and canoeists to explore. Local families once farmed portions of these islands, creating a unique agricultural landscape within the river.

Coppermine Road Historic Mining Area

year-round

A quiet back road that winds past the remnants of several 19th-century copper mines, with many parcels still holding separate mining rights. The road offers glimpses into Monroe's industrial past, where hopeful miners once excavated the mountainside. Stone foundations and old mining scars dot the landscape, telling stories of boom and bust in New Hampshire's mineral age.

Signal Mountain Surveying Peak

fall

At 2,299 feet, this knob on Gardner Mountain has served as a major surveying reference point for maps between Mount Mansfield and Mount Washington for over a century. While not heavily trafficked, it offers commanding views and represents a piece of New England's cartographic history. The mountain requires bushwhacking skills but rewards hikers with a sense of standing at a geographic crossroads.
