About Newbury

Newbury wraps around the southern tip of Lake Sunapee, New Hampshire's sixth-largest lake, and the town lives and breathes by its water. Mount Sunapee State Park dominates the landscape with alpine skiing in winter and a full adventure park in summer, all operated by Vail Resorts. The John Hay Estate at The Fells offers 83 acres of historic gardens and half a mile of undeveloped lakeshore, while Newbury Harbor buzzes with boats, a public dock, and summer concerts at the gazebo. The year-round population of about 1,800 swells past 6,000 in summer as seasonal residents return to their lakeside camps and cottages. South Newbury's 19th-century town hall, 1831 church, and the Sunapee Lake Grange — still operating after more than a century — anchor the historic village. This is a town where the calendar revolves around ice-out in spring and leaf-peeping in fall.

Hidden Gems in Newbury

Beyond the well-known attractions, Newbury has spots that locals love and visitors rarely find.

Bell Cove Historic Caboose Museum

summer

A vintage red caboose sitting in a small park at the southern tip of Lake Sunapee, filled with railroad memorabilia from the B&M Concord-Claremont line that operated from the 1870s to 1950s. This little gem contains signal lights, lanterns, bells, timetables, and even a desk and stove from the railroad era. Open weekends late May through mid-October, it's one of those unadvertised treasures you stumble upon by chance.

Chicken Farmer Rock

year-round

A beloved piece of local folklore - a roadside rock painted with "Chicken Farmer, I Still Love You" that's been refreshed by mystery hands for decades. The message originated in the 1970s-80s as a shy teenager's love note to a girl who lived on a chicken farm across the street. When the state painted over it in 2011, locals petitioned to bring it back. The town even hosts an annual Chicken Farmer 5K race in its honor.

Lake Solitude

year-round

A hidden mountain lake nestled below rocky white ledges just below Mount Sunapee's summit. This lily-pad filled pond offers remarkable solitude and tranquility, accessible by a moderate 1.2-mile hike through moss-covered rocks and fragrant fir forests. The white ledges overlook provides a spectacular bird's-eye view down onto the lake, making you understand how it earned its peaceful name.

Herrick Cove Lighthouse

year-round

One of three charming lighthouses on Lake Sunapee, this white hexagonal wooden lighthouse was built in 1893 by steamboat owners to guide tourists to grand resort hotels. Also known as "Ginger's Light" after restoration work funded by memorial donations, it stands 24 feet tall marking the entrance to Herrick Cove. Best viewed from the water, it's a piece of the lake's golden age when wealthy families arrived by train and steamship.

Fishersfield Park

year-round

A local recreational park managed by the Newbury Recreation Department that serves as the town's community gathering spot. Named after one of Newbury's former names (the town was called Fishersfield from 1772-1837), this park offers sports fields and recreational activities away from the tourist crowds. It's where locals come to play and hosts community events throughout the year.
