About Newport

Newport is the county seat of Sullivan County and has carried the nickname "The Sunshine Town" for generations. The Sugar River cuts through the center of town, once powering the mills that defined its industrial era and now offering a scenic recreational corridor. Sturm, Ruger & Co. built its New Hampshire plant here in the 1960s and remains the town's largest employer, producing revolvers and rifles with a workforce that has at times exceeded 1,000. The town operates as the commercial hub for the Lake Sunapee region, with Sugar River Plaza anchoring retail along Routes 103 and 11. Lake Sunapee provides the backdrop for much of Newport's outdoor life, with Crow's Nest Campground offering seasonal camping and direct water access for swimming, boating, and fishing. Northstar Campground adds more camping options with RV and tent sites plus a swimming pool. The lake draws both locals and visitors throughout the warmer months, while the Sugar River corridor provides fishing spots and connects to regional trail networks. Newport's covered bridge, the state's oldest town band, and the Richards Free Library give the downtown real texture. Sullivan County government offices are headquartered here, adding another layer of stable employment. The cost of living is noticeably lower than the southeastern part of the state, making Newport attractive to families and workers willing to trade commute time for affordability.

Hidden Gems in Newport

Beyond the well-known attractions, Newport has spots that locals love and visitors rarely find.

Corbin Covered Bridge & Park

year-round

A rebuilt Town Lattice covered bridge from 1845 spanning the Sugar River with an inspiring backstory. After arsonists destroyed the original in 1993, determined locals fought bureaucracy and raised funds to rebuild it exactly as it was, completing the project in 1995. The park beside it offers picnic tables and fishing access to the Sugar River, creating a peaceful spot locals cherish for its community spirit as much as its beauty.

Sugar River Rail Trail Covered Railroad Bridges

year-round

Two of only eight surviving covered railroad bridges in America, accessible via the 9.5-mile multi-use trail. The Pier Bridge is the world's longest covered railroad bridge at 216 feet, while Wright's Bridge features unique laminated arch construction. These towering, narrow structures feel completely different from road covered bridges, and the trail itself crosses the Sugar River seven times through varied landscapes.

Sarah Josepha Hale Memorial Park

year-round

A contemplative sculpture garden honoring Newport's most famous daughter, the woman who convinced Lincoln to make Thanksgiving a national holiday and wrote 'Mary Had a Little Lamb.' The bronze bust is surrounded by symbolic sculptures including chained wrists (her opposition to slavery) and stacked books (her 40+ published works). Each Thanksgiving, locals knit scarves for the statue in a charming community tradition.

Joel McGregor Revolutionary War Marker

year-round

A roadside historical marker commemorating New Hampshire's believed last surviving Revolutionary War soldier, who lived to age 101. McGregor was imprisoned for eight months in the infamous Old Sugar House in NYC, survived when many comrades died of starvation, then settled in Newport as a blacksmith. The marker stands quietly at the intersection, easy to miss but telling a powerful story of endurance.

Library Arts Center

year-round

A thriving community arts hub that grew from a small gallery in a rustic carriage house to a cultural anchor downtown. The non-profit presents everything from murder mystery dinners to the quirky annual Peeps Diorama Contest. What makes it special is the authentic community feel - locals volunteer, artists of all levels gather for drop-in painting sessions, and the programming reflects genuine grassroots creativity rather than tourist-focused events.
