Hidden Gems in Walpole

Beyond the well-known attractions, Walpole has spots that locals love and visitors rarely find.

High Blue

year-round, best in fall

A 264-acre Forest Society reservation with a 2.4-mile double-loop trail to the highest point in Walpole at 1,588 feet. Panoramic views of the Connecticut River valley and southern Vermont from the summit, plus an unusual lowland spruce-fir forest on the Faulkner Loop. The name comes from the blue-tinged distant views.

Walpole Gateway

spring through fall

A community-conserved parcel of Connecticut River shoreline purchased in 2018 through townspeople generosity. A farm road winds down through meadow to a footpath leading to a beautiful gravel bar directly on the Connecticut River. About 60% of the parcel is designated protected shoreline harboring unique plant species.

Distant Hill Gardens and Nature Trail

year-round

A 155-acre nonprofit learning center with two miles of wheelchair-accessible gravel trails plus three miles of hiking trails. Highlights include a Geology Trail with ten interpreted rock outcrops, a monthly Story Walk for children, a forest play area, and free loaner snowshoes, sleds, and butterfly nets. All free, open dawn to dusk.

Walpole Academy (Heritage Museum)

summer and fall

An 1831 Greek Revival schoolhouse that served as a private academy peaking at 193 students, then as Walpole's public high school until 1950. Now houses the Walpole Historical Society's museum displaying furniture, garments, and records spanning the town's history from its 1736 frontier-fort founding. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1975.

Hooper Golf Course

May through October

A 1927 nine-hole course designed by Golden Age architects Wayne Stiles and John Van Kleek on farmland bequeathed to the town. Ranked as high as No. 2 among U.S. nine-hole courses by architect Tom Doak. The old Watkins Tavern serves as the clubhouse, and the Hooper trust funds youth environmental programs for the town.
