Hidden Gems in Langdon

Beyond the well-known attractions, Langdon has spots that locals love and visitors rarely find.

Cold River Covered Bridge (McDermott Bridge)

year-round

Built in 1869 and nestled off Crane Brook Road, this weathered wooden gem is one of New Hampshire's few surviving 19th-century covered bridges. The unpainted structure spans 81 feet across the Cold River, and while it's now only for foot traffic, its creaking boards and rustic charm transport you back to a simpler time. The bridge sits quietly beside its modern replacement, cables securing it to its younger neighbor like an old man leaning on his grandson.

Prentiss (Drewsville) Covered Bridge

year-round

At just 35 feet long, this is New Hampshire's smallest covered bridge, tucked away on the Old Cheshire Turnpike over Great Brook. Built in 1874 by Albert S. Granger using virgin timber from Fall Mountain, it's a tiny time capsule that once carried stagecoaches between Keene and Charlestown. You can hear the brook babbling beneath the weathered planks as you walk across, while cars whisper by on the modern bridge that bypassed it in 1954.

Fall Mountain State Forest Trail

year-round

This 3.6-mile out-and-back trail wanders through quiet woods that locals prefer over the crowded state park destinations. The gentle 567-foot elevation gain leads through peaceful forest where you might spot ponds glinting between the trees and enjoy solitude even during peak hiking season. The trail follows old logging roads where sawmill owner Sanford Granger once harvested virgin timber for his famous covered bridges in the 1800s.
