Hidden Gems in Whitefield

Beyond the well-known attractions, Whitefield has spots that locals love and visitors rarely find.

North Country Orchard

fall

A small, family-owned apple orchard tucked away on Stickney's Road that opens for just five weeks each September and October. The orchard features 20 varieties of apples on 350 trees planted in 1998, with breathtaking mountain views surrounding the property. The smell of crisp apples mingles with autumn air as you walk through rows of trees, and their small shop offers fresh cider, local honey, and maple syrup.

Weeks State Park and Prospect Mountain Fire Tower

year-round

Just 7 miles north of Whitefield on Route 3, this lesser-known state park sits atop 2,058-foot Mount Prospect where Congressman John Wingate Weeks built his summer estate in 1912. You can drive the narrow, winding 1.5-mile auto road to the summit or hike one of several trails. The free-access fire tower offers panoramic views of the White Mountains and Connecticut River Valley, while the estate grounds include historic buildings and hiking trails through old apple orchards.

Weathervane Theatre

summer

A professional Equity theatre that's been bringing Broadway-caliber productions to the North Country since 1966. What makes it special is their alternating repertory format - they perform different shows each night throughout the summer, allowing you to see multiple productions in one weekend. The intimate 250-seat auditorium has no obstructed views, with no seat more than 40 feet from the stage. It's genuinely beloved by locals who return year after year.
