About Northumberland

Northumberland is a Coos County town anchored by the village of Groveton, named for a grove of maples where the railroad station once stood. The Connecticut River forms the western boundary, and a covered bridge at Groveton still spans the Upper Ammonoosuc River. The 1799 Meetinghouse and Museum houses historical artifacts and opens seasonally, while the remains of Fort Wentworth near Cape Horn recall the French and Indian War. A coal-powered steam locomotive from the old Odell Manufacturing paper mill sits on public display, a monument to the paper industry that once drove the economy. Morse Mountain, Cape Horn, and Moore Mountain offer rugged hiking, and the surrounding forests support hunting, snowmobiling, and timber harvesting. With about 2,100 residents, Groveton is rebuilding its identity from mill town to outdoor recreation hub — gritty, resilient, and proud.

Hidden Gems in Northumberland

Beyond the well-known attractions, Northumberland has spots that locals love and visitors rarely find.

Groveton Covered Bridge

year-round

Built in 1852 by Captain Charles Richardson, this 126-foot Paddleford truss bridge spans the Upper Ammonoosuc River and is the last remaining of five covered bridges once found in Northumberland. The weathered red wooden bridge is closed to vehicle traffic but welcomes pedestrians to walk through and experience its century-old timber construction. A small picnic area sits on the riverbank below, where the sound of flowing water mingles with birdsong, making it perfect for a quiet lunch away from the tourist crowds.
