America's Oldest Summer Resort on Lake Winnipesaukee

About Wolfeboro

Wolfeboro bills itself as "The Oldest Summer Resort in America," and the claim holds up: Colonial Governor John Wentworth built a summer estate on nearby Lake Wentworth in 1769, making this the first vacation destination in the United States. The town sits at the eastern shore of Lake Winnipesaukee, New Hampshire's largest lake, and its compact downtown fills with visitors from Memorial Day through foliage season. Year-round, Wolfeboro is a real community — Huggins Hospital provides regional healthcare, Brewster Academy brings international boarding students to its 80-acre lakeside campus, and GI Plastek runs advanced injection-molding operations. Lake access defines daily life here, with Albee Beach and Cate Park offering public swimming and sandy shoreline on Winnipesaukee's eastern edge. Locals know about The Nick, a swimming hole on the Winnipesaukee River where generations have enjoyed cliff jumping into the deeper pools. The Wright Museum preserves WWII-era American history with a nationally significant military vehicle collection, while winter brings cross-country skiing at Abenaki and ice fishing on the lake. The population swells from roughly 6,300 to 15,000 in summer, and the local economy has adapted with marinas, restaurants, and shops that sustain the year-round tax base. This balance between seasonal tourism and permanent residents keeps Wolfeboro functioning as both a vacation destination and a working community where people actually live and raise families.

Hidden Gems in Wolfeboro

Beyond the well-known attractions, Wolfeboro has spots that locals love and visitors rarely find.

Bridge Falls Path

year-round

This half-mile path from downtown to Wolfeboro Falls provides a scenic walk, run, or bike along the shores of Back Bay, following the route of a decommissioned railroad turned trail. The level terrain offers scenic views the whole way, with some parts wooded and others wide open overlooking lakes, creating a peaceful escape away from traffic. Dogs can enjoy spots along the path to take a dip in the water.

Sewall Woods Conservation Area

year-round

A quiet and scenic 179-acre woodland located just a short distance from Main Street in downtown Wolfeboro. This well-maintained trail system manages to be a hidden gem and private from tourists who visit, with a wonderfully quiet atmosphere. The trails are nicely shaded for running in summer months. Its extensive trail system connects with the Town's Abenaki trail network, providing over 18 miles of trails total.

Carry Beach

summer

A quiet, public pocket beach off the beaten path in a cove-like setting in the Winter Harbor area of Lake Winnipesaukee, secluded and shallow, perfect for young swimmers and families. The roped swimming area has a sandy bottom with a few shady spots and picnic tables, and often offers fabulous sunsets for late evening picnics. In August the water is quite warm and clear, and because there are no waves, you can swim out to a small rock about 150 yards away.
