Hidden Gems in Gorham

Beyond the well-known attractions, Gorham has spots that locals love and visitors rarely find.

Garnet Pool

summer

A Victorian-era swimming hole at the confluence of the Peabody River and Nineteen Mile Brook, popular since the 1800s when grand hotel guests would visit on day trips. The crystal-clear, deep water is framed by granite walls, and the entrance is marked by two wooden piers connected with a chain — a relic of its genteel past.

Peboamauk Fall

late spring through fall

A 30-foot mossy waterfall hidden in a boulder-strewn gulch within Moose Brook State Park. Its Abenaki name translates to 'Winter's Home,' fitting because the gulch floor retains ice into summer among its massive boulders. The falls cascade down a smooth, mossy ledge with a small sandy pool at the base.

Gorham Railroad Museum

Memorial Day through Columbus Day

A saved-from-demolition 1907 Grand Trunk Railway depot housing a remarkable model railroad built inside an actual boxcar — a computerized miniature recreation of the entire Androscoggin Valley rail system. Outside sit a 1911 steam locomotive, a 1949 diesel, a 1924 boxcar, and a 1942 caboose.

Medallion Opera House

year-round

A 224-seat performing arts center hidden on the upper floor of Gorham's Town Hall, named for its striking 8-foot ceiling medallion. First opened in 1915 with ten-cent children's tickets, it was painstakingly restored over five and a half years and reopened in 2010. Most passersby never realize it's above the municipal offices.

Emerald Pool

summer

A deep, jade-colored swimming hole on the Peabody River where locals have been swimming for over 70 years. Features cliff-jumping rocks 15-18 feet high over water 20-30 feet deep — serious depth for a mountain river pool. Unlike the crowded Lower Falls in nearby Albany, Emerald Pool retains a locals-only feel.
