About Randolph

Randolph is a tiny mountain community of about 328 people tucked into the northern slopes of the Presidential Range, where the trails outnumber the roads and the hiking culture runs deeper than almost anywhere in New England. The Randolph Mountain Club, founded in 1910, maintains nearly 102 miles of trails and four shelters on Mounts Madison, Adams, and Jefferson, making this one of the most trail-rich towns in the White Mountains. Many homes are seasonal, carrying on a tradition that stretches back to the grand hotel era when vacationers arrived by train. The settled center of town sits between the White Mountain National Forest to the south and the Ice Gulch Town Forest to the north, creating a pocket of civilization surrounded by wilderness. Life here is quiet, deliberate, and deeply connected to the mountains.

Hidden Gems in Randolph

Beyond the well-known attractions, Randolph has spots that locals love and visitors rarely find.

Lookout Ledge

year-round

This lesser-known outcrop offers one of the most intimate views of King Ravine on Mount Adams, with a direct sightline into the massive headwall. The 3.2-mile round-trip hike rewards you with panoramic views across the Israel River valley, with Mount Madison, Adams, and Jefferson arrayed before you. There's a log bench in the shade where you can sit and take in the theater of mountains, plus you'll spot Durand Lake shimmering below.

Ice Gulch

summer

This narrow, boulder-filled ravine creates a microclimate so unique that ice persists between the rocks well into summer. The scramble through the gulch is one of the most challenging in the White Mountains - you'll climb over, under, and around car-sized boulders in a landscape that feels primordial. The temperature drops dramatically as you enter, and the mossy rocks stay perpetually slippery. It's like having your own natural adventure course hidden in the forest.

Peboamauk Fall

spring

This 30-foot cascade, whose name means 'Winter's Home,' carries meltwater from the Ice Gulch above. The waterfall plunges through a lush, mossy environment between rock walls, creating a cool microclimate even on hot summer days. At the base is a small sandy pool where you can rest and listen to the constant sound of falling water. Most people skip this gem in favor of the more famous Ice Gulch above.

Castleview Ledge

year-round

This small open ledge offers intimate views of the Northern Presidential peaks through an enormous boulder formation known as Castleview Rock. The easy 1.8-mile loop provides 450 feet of elevation gain and leads to both the rock and ledge viewpoints. It's a perfect family hike that locals use as their quick mountain fix, with views of Mount Madison and Adams framed perfectly through the trees.

Ravine House Site

year-round

This peaceful spot features benches positioned near a flower garden with two stately elm trees, where a famous White Mountain inn once stood. A historical marker tells the story of the Ravine House and its role in Randolph's early tourism history. From here you get a beautiful framed view of Mount Madison, Mount Adams, and Dome Rock. It's the kind of contemplative spot where you can imagine the grand hotel guests taking their evening constitutionals.
