About Jackson

Jackson sits in the heart of the White Mountains, with Mount Washington's eastern slopes forming a dramatic backdrop to daily life. The town operates on a scale where the Jackson Grammar School serves local families, while the Eagle Mountain House & Golf Club provides one of the area's established hospitality anchors. Historic accommodations like The Inn at Thorn Hill & Spa, a Victorian inn from 1895, and Nordic Village Resort add to the local hospitality landscape. Most residents know their neighbors, and town meetings still matter for local decision-making. The town's location puts serious hiking, skiing, and mountain recreation right outside the door. Glen Ellis Falls Trailhead offers easy access to one of New Hampshire's most photographed waterfalls—a 64-foot cascade on the Ellis River that's just a 0.3-mile round-trip hike from Route 16 in Pinkham Notch. The trail even has a tunnel that passes under the highway, making it manageable for families. It's the kind of spot locals take visiting relatives to show off what living here means. As part of the Conway School District, Jackson families have access to educational resources that serve the broader Mount Washington Valley. Living here also means dealing with mountain weather, seasonal tourism traffic, and the realities of a small community where services and employment options are limited. Winter is long and requires preparation, but the trade-off is having the White Mountain National Forest as your backyard.

Hidden Gems in Jackson

Beyond the well-known attractions, Jackson has spots that locals love and visitors rarely find.

Thompson Falls

year-round

A spectacular 150-foot seven-tiered waterfall tucked away at Wildcat Mountain that was lost to public knowledge for much of the 20th century. Originally discovered by White Mountain School artist Benjamin Champney in the 1800s, this cascade chain flows down granite slopes with pools perfect for cooling off. The falls remained largely unknown until becoming an official trail in 2011, making it one of the true hidden gems where you'll encounter few other hikers on the easy 1.2-mile trail.

Carter Ledge

summer

A dramatic granite slab viewpoint visible from Route 16 but reached only by those willing to hike and scramble. The exposed granite ledges offer stunning views of Mount Chocorua and the Lakes Region spread out below, with blueberry bushes growing from cracks in the rock. This is where locals go for panoramic mountain views without the crowds of the major peaks - the granite is amazingly clean and solid, creating an otherworldly hiking experience above treeline.

Jackson Village Cemetery

year-round

A peaceful historic cemetery in the heart of Jackson Village that holds the stories of the town's earliest settlers dating back to the 1778 founding. The cemetery sits quietly along the village streets, with weathered headstones telling tales of generations of local families, Civil War veterans, and the hardy souls who carved out a life in these mountains. It's a contemplative spot where you can read the history of Jackson carved in stone, surrounded by the same mountain views these early residents knew.
