About Peterborough

Peterborough is the cultural capital of the Monadnock region and one of New Hampshire's most creatively charged small towns. MacDowell, America's preeminent artists' residency, has operated here since 1907 — Thornton Wilder wrote "Our Town" during his 1937 stay, modeling the fictional Grover's Corners on Peterborough itself. The walkable downtown along Depot Square and Main Street is packed with independent shops, the legendary Toadstool Bookshop, the Mariposa Museum of World Cultures, and the Peterborough Players summer theater. Post & Beam Brewing adds to the local scene with their small-batch craft beers and welcoming taproom. Beyond the arts, the town supports a real manufacturing base: New Hampshire Ball Bearings produces aerospace-grade components, and SoClean grew from a local startup into a nationally known medical device brand. Mount Monadnock — the most-climbed mountain in North America — rises just to the southwest, while Miller State Park on Pack Monadnock Mountain offers another outdoor draw. Established in 1891 as America's oldest state park, Miller features a 1.3-mile auto road to its 2,290-foot summit with panoramic views stretching to the Boston skyline on clear days. The Contoocook River runs through town, and families gather at Adams Park & Playground on Grove Street for community recreation. The surrounding hills and access to trails like the Wapack Trail give Peterborough a distinct New England character that feels earned, not staged. It's a place where serious artists work alongside precision manufacturers, where you can hike a mountain in the morning and catch theater in the evening.

Hidden Gems in Peterborough

Beyond the well-known attractions, Peterborough has spots that locals love and visitors rarely find.

Shieling State Forest

year-round

This quiet 45-acre gem was once the farm of Elizabeth Yates McGreal, author of the Newbery Medal-winning 'Amos Fortune, Free Man.' The forest trails cross Dunbar Brook twice, winding past huge glacial boulders, remnants of an old granite quarry and brickyard, and a wildflower garden maintained by the Peterborough Garden Club. It's a local favorite for a peaceful walk through history and nature.

Cranberry Meadow Pond Trail

year-round

This 2.2-mile trail follows Wallace Brook through hemlock forests and wetlands, starting with a raised boardwalk through marshland. About a mile in, you reach the serene pond with a scenic overlook and bench—perfect for catching your breath. The trail has a fascinating history: it passes through what was once Granville Felt's cranberry bog operation from the 1870s, with irrigation ditches still visible when the pond is drained.

Twin Elm Farm

year-round

Housed in an authentic 19th-century farmhouse and barn, this multi-dealer antique shop feels like wandering through someone's eccentric grandmother's house. With over 30 dealers, each room has its own personality—from vintage linens in the farmhouse bedrooms to garden treasures in the barn. The inventory changes constantly, and locals love the treasure hunt atmosphere and reasonable prices.

Peterborough Diner

year-round

This is Worcester Lunch Car #827, delivered in 1949 and famous for being the first Worcester diner manufactured in the now-iconic green and cream color scheme. Presidential candidates still stop here during campaign season, and the original bar stools were just lovingly restored in 2025. You'll smell the coffee and hear the sizzle of the grill in this perfectly preserved piece of Americana.
