Home to Mount Monadnock — World's Most-Climbed Peak

About Jaffrey

Jaffrey sits at the base of Mount Monadnock, one of the most climbed mountains in the world, and that 3,165-foot peak defines the town's identity and daily rhythm. On clear autumn mornings, the parking lots at Monadnock State Park fill before sunrise as hikers from across New England come for the summit views. But Jaffrey is more than a trailhead — Jaffrey Center is a picture-perfect New England village with white-steepled churches, stone walls, and the kind of quiet that writers like Willa Cather came here to find. Downtown Jaffrey has its own appeal, anchored by The Park Theatre, a historic community cinema that shows current films and hosts live performances as a nonprofit operation. The Benjamin Prescott Inn, housed in an 1853 Greek Revival farmhouse, speaks to the town's deep roots. Beyond the village center, Thorndike Pond, Gilmore Pond, and scattered conservation lands offer water access and solitude away from the mountain crowds. The town has a surprising industrial backbone with MilliporeSigma (Merck) as its largest employer and D.D. Bean as the world's largest matchbook manufacturer. About 30% of the town's land is protected conservation territory, keeping Jaffrey's character wild and wooded even as the Monadnock Region slowly grows.

Hidden Gems in Jaffrey

Beyond the well-known attractions, Jaffrey has spots that locals love and visitors rarely find.

Whittemore Island

year-round

A 5.4-acre island accessed only by boat or kayak in Thorndike Pond, featuring a pristine loop trail through hemlock, beech, and white pine forests. The island was saved from resort development in 1942 and offers a scenic lookout with sweeping pond views. Most visitors paddle to the small landing on the south side where there's a trail register, then explore the 0.37-mile trail network in peaceful solitude.

Smallpox Cemetery

year-round

A haunting memorial hidden in the woods where six victims of the 1792 smallpox epidemic were buried, including 12-year-old Nancy Thorndike and Revolutionary War soldier Oliver Gould. No gravestones remain, just a granite marker placed in 1985 and the weight of forgotten history. The remote site requires a 10-minute walk through the woods from Nutting Road.

Gramwick Trail at Mountain Brook Reservoir

year-round

A peaceful 1.5-mile shoreline trail created in 2016 that follows the edge of Mountain Brook Reservoir through mixed forest and over charming boardwalks. The trail ends at scenic swimming holes where you can see an old town road emerging from the water—a remnant from before the reservoir was dammed. The small parking area and trail kiosk feel wonderfully remote despite being close to town.

Old Burying Ground

year-round

Jaffrey's oldest cemetery from 1774, tucked behind the colonial Meetinghouse with remarkable gravestones including those of freed slave Amos Fortune and author Willa Cather. The weathered stones tell stories of three centuries, from Revolutionary War veterans to famous writers who found inspiration in this quiet corner. Visitors often leave tokens at Cather's grave to honor her literary legacy.

Gilmore Pond

spring

A pristine 115-acre pond with remarkably clear water where you can see bass swimming 22 feet below the surface. The small public launch feels like a local secret, perfect for early morning paddling when loons call and bald eagles soar overhead. Two shallow swimming areas offer sandy-bottom relief from summer heat, while the no-wake policy keeps the water peaceful and glass-smooth.
