About Fitzwilliam

Fitzwilliam sits in southwestern New Hampshire's Monadnock region, a town of 2,447 residents where rural roads connect scattered neighborhoods and working farms. The community centers around Fitzwilliam Central School and town government, with most commercial activity found along the main routes that connect to neighboring towns. As part of the Monadnock Regional School District, families here send their high schoolers to the regional campus while elementary students attend locally. The town maintains its rural character with large lots, wooded areas, and the kind of quiet that comes from being far enough from major highways to avoid through traffic, yet close enough to Keene and other regional centers for work and shopping.

Why Fitzwilliam?

  • Part of Monadnock Regional School District with local elementary school
  • Rural setting with larger lots and wooded properties
  • Small town government with direct access to local officials
  • Quiet location away from major traffic corridors
  • Access to Monadnock region outdoor recreation

Hidden Gems in Fitzwilliam

Beyond the well-known attractions, Fitzwilliam has spots that locals love and visitors rarely find.

Widow Gage Town Forest

year-round

A quiet 1.6-mile loop trail through conservation forest with a picturesque beaver pond, old cellar holes including the Whitcomb Cellar Hole, and a scenic overlook. Connects to the Metacomet-Monadnock Trail, which runs all the way to Connecticut. Far less trafficked than nearby Rhododendron State Park.

Sip Pond Peninsula Trail

spring through fall

A nearly 1.5-mile round-trip accessible trail with smooth crushed stone surface that follows the shore of Sip Pond to a peninsula with direct water access and a clear view of Mount Monadnock. Wheelchair, stroller, and bike friendly — a rarity for scenic pond trails in NH. Great for fishing and birdwatching.

The Pinnacle

year-round

A former ski area whose slopes are still mowed clear, creating an open hillside you can hike up for a panoramic view back toward Fitzwilliam village and the surrounding Monadnock region. No formal trail needed — just walk up the old ski slopes. Doubles as cross-country ski terrain in winter.

Amos J. Blake House Museum

summer

A small, lovingly maintained museum inside an 1837 building with thirteen themed rooms depicting 19th-century Fitzwilliam life: a doctor's office, a one-room schoolhouse, a children's room, and a military room. Reportedly haunted, which adds to its charm. Open Saturdays 1-4 PM, Memorial Day through Labor Day.

Rockwood Pond

summer

A secluded pond with carry-in-only boat access and no motorboats. Only 5 year-round homes on its nearly two-mile length, so it feels genuinely remote. Half the shoreline borders the rail trail, making it easy to combine a swim with a bike ride. A true locals-only swimming and kayaking spot.
