Four Historic Covered Bridges Span the Ashuelot River

About Swanzey

Swanzey holds four of New Hampshire's remaining covered bridges, more than any other town in the state, and that kind of historical preservation defines the community's character. The Carlton Bridge dates to 1789, the Thompson Bridge to 1832, and all four still carry traffic or foot passage over the Ashuelot River. Located just south of Keene, Swanzey gives residents access to the Monadnock region's largest city while maintaining its own rural identity across several distinct villages including West Swanzey, Swanzey Center, and East Swanzey. The old Homestead Woolen Mills shaped the town's industrial history until it closed in 1985. Today the economy leans toward small business, light manufacturing, and the services that come with proximity to Keene State College. Local businesses like Frogg Brewing add to the community fabric, producing small-batch craft beers that reflect the town's independent spirit. The Ashuelot River provides excellent paddling and fishing opportunities that draw residents outdoors throughout the year. The Cheshire Fairgrounds host events throughout the year, serving as a gathering place for the community. Housing remains affordable compared to eastern New Hampshire, making it an attractive option for families and young professionals who want rural living without giving up access to amenities in nearby Keene.

Hidden Gems in Swanzey

Beyond the well-known attractions, Swanzey has spots that locals love and visitors rarely find.

Tippin Rock Trail & 40-ton Boulder

year-round

This short but fascinating hike leads to a massive 40-ton glacial boulder that actually rocks when you push it in the right spot. The boulder sits on a granite slab atop Hewes Hill, surrounded by dramatic cliff-edge overlooks with views of Mount Monadnock. Local hikers have been visiting this geological wonder since the 1800s, and the trail continues beyond the rock to stunning viewpoints with 50-foot drop-offs.

Cresson/Sawyers Crossing Covered Bridge

year-round

More than just a bridge, this is a piece of living history with a Hollywood connection. Built in 1859 and reconstructed to celebrate with an all-night dance right on the bridge deck, it gained fame when Arthur Godfrey used it in a 1953 cigarette ad campaign. The Governor of New Hampshire even flew to New York to give Godfrey an honorary deed. It's considered Swanzey's most photogenic bridge, beloved by artists for its perfect proportions.

Wilson Pond

summer

This 72-acre hidden gem carries the ghosts of Keene's old electric railway days, when it was developed as a trolley park destination in 1911. Today it's a peaceful spot where locals swim at the old boat landing near where the factories once stood, fish from quiet shores, and paddle through spring-fed waters. The pond draws you into its calm with a fascinating industrial-turned-natural history most visitors never discover.

Honey Hill Trail & Mount Monadnock Viewpoint

fall

A moderate 2.5-mile hike through hemlock forest and over oak-covered ledges leads to an 801-foot bald summit with a bench and one of the sweetest views of Mount Monadnock you'll find anywhere. Stone walls and old farm boundaries tell the story of settlers who once farmed these now-wooded slopes. The payoff view of the iconic peak rising from the landscape makes every step worth it.

Mount Caesar Cemetery Trail

year-round

This unique trail begins in a historic cemetery across from town hall and leads to the 962-foot summit named for Caesar Freeman, a freed slave granted land here in 1753. The rocky summit offers panoramic views of Mount Monadnock and the surrounding hills, while the trail itself passes through old granite quarries and stone walls. Few visitors know about the carved stone arrow at the summit that points directly toward Mount Monadnock, a Native American marker from when this served as a lookout point.
