About Richmond

Richmond is a quiet, wooded town in the Monadnock Region where stone walls wind through the forest and gravel roads lead to hilltop homesteads with long views toward Mount Monadnock. With about 1,225 residents spread across nearly 37 square miles, there is plenty of room to breathe here. The town retains its rural New England character with a simple town center, volunteer fire department, and the kind of community where town meeting still matters. Richmond sits at the intersection of wildness and accessibility — deep woods and undeveloped ridgelines are minutes from the shops and restaurants of Keene. The Rhododendron State Park is nearby, and the forests here are full of wildlife, hiking trails, and quiet places to get lost on purpose.

Hidden Gems in Richmond

Beyond the well-known attractions, Richmond has spots that locals love and visitors rarely find.

Richmond Boulder

year-round

This massive glacial erratic sits hidden just yards from Route 32, a house-sized granite boulder dropped by retreating glaciers. An old photograph shows groups of Victorian-era folks in full dress having picnics atop this giant rock. You can reach it via a short trail from a small pull-out on the east side of Route 32.

Richmond Tramp House

year-round

One of only two fully restored tramp houses in New Hampshire, this tiny red building served as overnight shelter for unemployed men traveling through town from the Civil War through the 1960s. The restored 10x12-foot interior displays period furnishings including a wood stove, bunk bed, and simple table, offering a glimpse into a forgotten chapter of social history.

Harris Soapstone Quarry

spring

This long-abandoned quarry deep in the woods near the Massachusetts border is now overgrown but still yields museum-quality cordierite crystals for those who know where to look. The old industrial site has become a hidden treasure for mineral collectors, known among rockhounds for producing some of the finest cordierite specimens in New England.

Eliza Ballou Monument

spring

A granite obelisk marks the birthplace of President James Garfield's mother in the remote backwoods where it's been wild New Hampshire for over 200 years. Reaching this monument requires a half-mile hike on ATV trails through the forest, making it feel like a genuine wilderness pilgrimage to an obscure piece of presidential history.
