About Rindge

Rindge is a quiet Monadnock Region town where the forested hills roll toward the iconic summit of Mount Monadnock, visible from nearly every high point. The Cathedral of the Pines, a nationally recognized open-air memorial to fallen soldiers, draws visitors to its hilltop sanctuary with sweeping views across the treetops. Franklin Pierce University brings a youthful energy to the otherwise rural landscape, and the Woodbound Inn offers lakeside lodging on a classic New Hampshire pond. Dirt roads thread past stone walls and old farmsteads, while Contoocook Lake and Pearly Lake provide swimming and fishing within minutes of the town center. It is a place where the pace is deliberately slow, the night skies are dark, and community still revolves around town meeting.

Hidden Gems in Rindge

Beyond the well-known attractions, Rindge has spots that locals love and visitors rarely find.

Freeborn Stearns House (Rindge Historical Society Museum)

year-round

This 1815 Federal-style house serves as a captivating museum filled with local artifacts, including Revolutionary War veteran Eleazer Blake's discharge papers signed by George Washington and the hand-painted sleigh of mysteriously murdered doctor William Dean. The museum occupies a building with its own ghostly legends - visitors report smelling phantom pipe smoke from former resident 'Pop' Allen. Open only Wednesday mornings and first Saturday afternoons, making it feel like a well-kept secret.

Rooted in Clay Pottery Studio

year-round

A working pottery studio tucked away on Middle Winchendon Road where potter Shana Brautigam creates unique wood-fired ceramics using seasonal textures gathered from local walks - fern impressions, ash bark, maple leaves pressed into clay. The studio offers classes and displays finished pieces with distinctive earthy tones only achievable through wood-firing techniques. You'll need to call ahead for an appointment, adding to its hidden gem status.

Jowder's Cove Beach and Association

summer

A private association beach on Lake Contoocook accessible through deeded rights for property owners in the cul-de-sac development. The secluded beach features a picnic pavilion, boat docks, and launch area tucked away from the main lake traffic. Properties here offer some of the most pristine lake frontage in town, with views stretching up the entire length of Contoocook Lake toward Mount Monadnock.

Meetinghouse Cemetery

year-round

This atmospheric hillside cemetery dates to 1764 and contains some of Rindge's earliest settlers and Revolutionary War veterans, including several Minutemen marked with metal plaques. The uneven, dramatic terrain was never flattened, creating a naturally moody landscape with slate headstones from the 1700s featuring death heads and weeping willow motifs. The cemetery sits behind the historic 1796 meetinghouse and connects to Rindge's original town center.

Pearly Lake/Pond Trail and Beach

summer

A 192-acre lake on the Franklin Pierce University campus with public beach access and lifeguard during summer afternoons. The short Pearly Pond Trail features interpretive kiosks and leads to a boathouse, offering a peaceful walk through mostly undeveloped watershed. The lake's tea-colored water from dissolved organic acids creates a distinctive appearance, and it's known locally as a quiet spot for contemplation away from busier lakes.
