About the Monadnock Region
The Monadnock Region centers around Mount Monadnock, which rises 3,165 feet above sea level in southwestern New Hampshire. The region encompasses rolling hills, lakes, and the Connecticut River valley, with numerous covered bridges including four historic spans in Swanzey alone. College towns like Keene, home to Keene State College, and Peterborough, site of the MacDowell artist colony where Thornton Wilder wrote 'Our Town,' anchor the area's educational and cultural activities.
The region balances rural landscapes with active arts communities and historical sites. The Ashuelot River connects towns that maintain their 19th-century architecture while supporting contemporary galleries, theaters, and music venues. From Franklin Pierce's birthplace in Hillsborough to Franklin Pierce University in Rindge, the area combines American history with ongoing educational and artistic programs that draw both residents and visitors year-round.
